Final Details and a Short Night of Sleep

-1 day to departure

The final day of preparations is here. After weeks of planning and looking ahead, the day has come to execute. The time is finally here when we step on the plane, say goodbye to the western hemisphere and hello to the second-largest and second-most-populous continent: Africa.

This afternoon my bed was covered with four open suitcases and two weeks worth of cameras, clothes, batteries, snacks and much more. There was also some twenty books. The challenge was getting it all to fit in the four luggage pieces with each one weighing less than fifty pounds.

Some of the more interesting items included in our travel gear included a container of combination insect repellent and sunscreen spray, a lapel microphone and anti-malaria tablets. The actual name of the anti-malarial medicine is doxycycline. The first tablet is to be taken a day or two before travel (we took our first today), then a tablet a day while in Africa, then a tablet a day for 28 consecutive days after departure.

Tomorrow we need to arrive to the Tampa airport 2 to 3 hours before our 7:45 AM departure. First stop NYC (current temperature 44°). We need to sleep fast and be ready for a full 24+ hours of travel.

Until tomorrow...
